IF I WERE A KING
If I were a king, my reign would bring: A paradise where hell once stood, Feats unimagined, wrought for good, Joy to blaze where sorrow burned, Your dreams preserved, my life adjourned.
I’d craft a world of comfort’s grace, Diminish self to lift your place, Guard your sleep, your hopes sustain, Sacrifice my truth for your gain.
Yet past kings promised, none fulfilled, Their castles float where dreams are chilled. They pledged the moon, delivered pain, Feathered their nests, left yours to wane.
They bared your flaws for all to see, Devoured the flesh, left bones to thee. White elephants rose, your future sold, Their greed exposed in tales retold.
My reign you’d love, yet some might hate: I’d pave new paths for time’s estate, Wed past to future, peace to keep, With empathy firm, not rage too deep.
I’d rear your hearts to chase the sun, Soar on wings where eagles run, Place “we” o’er “me” in every deed, For you, my fate, my rule would heed.
